Our Vision

“Biotechnology is not merely a set of technologies, but also an underlying philosophy of entrepreneurship, risk-taking and long-term vision.”

Biotechnology is a broad and encompassing term describing a set of interlocking technologies applicable in areas ranging from fuels to medicines. Since its inception with the birth of Genentech and recombinant DNA technology in 1976, biotechnology has spurred an unprecedented degree of convergence between science and business. This observation has led Harvard Business School Professor Gary Pisano to describe biotechnology as the “business of science.” BioSynergy embodies this synergy between business and the life sciences. Our title reflects our conviction in the importance of those few foolhardy pioneering scientists who venture into industry to bring their research to patients.

BioSynergy is written with people interested in and with a background in the life sciences in mind. Unlike more general professional publications that attempt to weave out superficial stories for laypeople or journals targeted towards specialists, our magazine is unique from others in that it focuses on the core ideas of biotechnology. It is designed to kindle and rekindle passion for biotechnology. One of our most devoted readers, Tom Perkins - legendary venture capitalist of Google Genentech fame, finds it “A most enjoyable read!”  BioSynergy is ideal for both students and executives alike.

As the gathering place for biotech's corporate and scientific leaders, the annual BIO International Convention is where nearly two thirds of BioSynergy’s thirty thousand circulation are distributed. The convention’s essence is to celebrate the spirit of biotechnology. By sharing new ideas and technologies and forging new partnerships and alliances, the attendees reflect on the ideals and unbridled energy that led them into this arduous marathon. This is important because unlike most other industries, it is common for over a decade to pass before a novel discovery is translated into a useful product. So there is a certain naivety and blind faith necessary to believe that one can beat the exceedingly low odds of success. BioSynergy brings home this message.

Our aim is to catalyze the birth of the next generation of biotech's pioneers by conveying its ideas through the stories of biotech's luminaries and the exciting technologies they are creating to students and executives across North America.

Our Principles

  1. We seek to promote an understanding and appreciation of biotechnology. It is not merely an exciting set of technologies revolutionizing medicine, but also an underlying set of values including entrepreneurship, risk-taking and long-term vision.

  2. We are not a herd. We pride ourselves on our tight-knit, entrepreneurial and creative culture.

  3. We stress teamwork in everything we do. While individual creativity is always encouraged, we have found that team effort often produces the best results.

  4. We look for the most ambitious, driven and idealistic students, but believe firmly that complacency will lead to extinction. The dedication of our people to our organization and the intense effort they give their jobs is greater than one finds in most organizations.

  5. We are results-driven and have an uncompromising determination to achieve excellence in everything we undertake. You will see tangible products and opportunities from your efforts. We believe that results are critical to attracting and keeping our best people.
